How I Teach Editing Your Blog Categories for Better User Experience & SEO

One of the reasons that I had Kids Activities Blog updated was to get some additional tools to edit my blog's category pages.  In the olden days of blogging, category pages were rarely referenced to the reader because they were simply a link list with images.  Today, category pages can be very dynamic and informative and often readers don't even realize the difference between a category page and regular blog post.

Big picture: a category page can now be THE resource of the internet for "all things" your category topic.  When you approach updating your category, think about addressing some of these things:

  1. To fully understand the topic, are there words that need defined or concepts demystified?
  2. Does your reader need some starter information to get the full benefit out of the topic?
  3. As an expert in this topic, what are your favorite posts, printables, resources?
  4. To help your reader find something quickly, can you give them the best recommendations within that topic based on use, age, situation, ingredient, etc.

For example, here is my category that has letter L learning for Preschoolers - within the articles that are listed in the category I cover: letter L books, letter L printables, letter L crafts, letter L words, and basic alphabet learning resources.

In the intro to my letter L category, I add the embedding of a YouTube video of a preschool letter L song, some basics on letter L lesson plan, a highlight of favorite letter L crafts, a list of free printable coloring pages with things that start with the letter L and some letter learning resources for parents and teachers.

When you look at the entire category as, "What would a mom/dad/teacher/caregiver need to easily teach the letter L to a preschooler?" then I got it covered.  In fact, it is hard for any other resource on the internet to compete because every time I add another letter L blog post to that category, I am "updating" this letter L resource.

Win for the reader, win for Google as well.

Here is a in-real-time walk through of chatting through updating that and a few other categories on Kids Activities Blog:

A challenge with category pages is that they do not show up in Clariti.  I like to add them to the editorial calendar so they are regularly updated and don't forget to pin, share on FB and add the links in your regular emails to readers.
